Native to Eastern North America, Purple-Flowering Raspberry is a deciduous, suckering shrub that typically grows 3 to 6 feet tall with a spread of 6 to 12 feet wide. It is one of the best of the ornamental raspberries because of its rose-like, fragrant, 2 inch wide, rose-purple flowers occurring singly or in few-flowered clusters, with a long summer bloom period. Leaves are palmate, 5-lobed, maple-like, medium green and 4 to 10 inches wide becoming pale yellow in fall. Purple-Flowering Raspberry has hairy stems but virtually no prickles. Flowers are followed by 3/4 inch, cup-shaped red to purple fruits which are edible.
